ABOUT SNORING

  • What is snoring?

Snoring is considered a sign of deep sleep, but it may be a disturbing problem for someone sleeping nearby, and it may also mean a serious health threat.
Snoring occurs due to vibration of the soft tissues of the upper respiratory tract, and in particular, the soft palate during sleep. Upper nuchal (neck) muscles of pharynx loosen, and there is insufficient tension support of weakened muscles in the nasopharynx. The soft palates easily shiver and vibrate with every breath, and those vibrations typically cause the sound of snoring.
  • When do we observe snoring?

Up to 85% of the population suffers from a so-called simple snoring. It affects both men and women and results in OCCASIONAL snoring while sleeping in the supine position, which from time to time will affect everyone. The most common causes are temporary colds, allergies, dry air in the room, alcohol, etc. This group may also include those affected by HABITUAL SNORING. This is the so-called primary snoring in which a person snores every night and in any position. It occurs in up to 48% of men and 34% of women.
  • What are the possible causes of snoring?

There may be many different causes of snoring, for example, GENETIC CAUSES or an individual may have a genetic predisposition to weakened muscle tonus of the upper respiratory tract. Another possible cause could be due to overweight; storage of fat cells in the pharynx, and the mucous membrane exacerbates the elasticity and flexibility of the upper respiratory tract. ORGANIC CHANGES, such as the curvature of the nasal septum, enlarged adenoids or improperly developed jaw, all restrict breathing during sleep. CHEMICALS that get into the body can cause weakness of muscles in the upper respiratory tract. Those can be, for example, the various types of medication (for stimulation or sedation, sleeping pills, abuse of alcohol or other narcotics). SMOKING and allergies may irritate the oral mucosa of the throat with smoke or allergens which will cause the throat to get unevenly swollen and puffy compared to non-allergic or non-smokers and causes narrowing of space for air to circulate and again causes snoring.
The most common and most dangerous is the accumulation of these causes. So snoring is not only related to the obese smokers with allergies but due to a certain degree of restriction of the respiratory tract during sleep and the real cause of snoring lies in what causes the restriction.
  • What might be the consequences of snoring?

The consequences of snoring are discovering gradually in various complications. It often results in fatigue due to snoring including people from the close surrounding of the snoring individual. Furthermore, snoring individuals often suffer from high blood pressure, have an increased risk of stroke or experience Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA).
